Genre Research: It Chapter 2
Genre research (It Chapter 2)
Camera Angles (CAMS) - I noticed in the movie that there is a frequent amount of low angles, eye levels, extreme close-ups, high angles, and tracking shots. These angles and shots were used to either show the reactions on the character's face, make the character feel like it's being followed or watched, create dramatic tensions or emphasize how scary the villain is.
Mis-en-scene (CLAMPS) - The costumes of the characters were realistic, casual outfits for the protagonists and an old, torn, and dirty outfit for the intended character of the antagonist. The lighting depended on where the scenes were being shot. For example, in a tunnel when confronting the antagonist it’s usually quite dark or dim, just enough to still the characters, engaging the audience and showing the antagonist emerge from the darkness into the light to seem horrifying, flashing lights in battles. The acting was very dramatic, the characters were always in constant fear or panic, which sets the mood of the film. Makeup was used to emphasize a certain look on the characters, making them seem in total shock, or scary. It’s also used to create bruises and cuts to make the film seem more realistic. There were a lot of props in this film, weapons, scraps of metal, and other random objects to add to the scene’s setting, each having a specific purpose and adding to the storyline. There were multiple settings as characters often moved from place to place, each set was a part of the plot which added to the storyline.
Editing - Flashbacks to childhoods and cross-cutting whenever more than one character was going through something dramatic or eventful at the same time but in different places.
Sound - diegetic sounds, unsettling and hidden sounds to create suspense, and sometimes no sound when there is about to be a jumpscare
Elements of the movie that we liked - The mood and atmosphere of the movie are what sets it in the horror genre. The fear and gradually increasing suspense and curiosity are what kept us engaged and interested the entire time.
Elements of the movie that we disliked - We dislike the multiple settings in the movie, it felt like there was a lot to keep track of and sometimes left us confused about the significance of each place.
